WOMAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA is a global platform for women and gender non-conforming people working in film and video, including mainstream, independent and experimental filmmakers. Directors, technicians, producers, writers and visual artists are all welcome to join and participate, as well as distributors and critics/scholars. We are committed to increasing the visibility of trans/cis women and all genderqueer/trans people who are working in film and video, improving their funding and working conditions, and increasing their access to film/video equipment, training and education. WMC actively supports trans/cis women filmmakers and all genderqueer/trans filmmakers because their films are often ignored by the mainstream, and they are often marginalized within avant-garde and academic circles as well.
The films that interest us most challenge patriarchy, heterosexism, transphobia, the gender binary, racism, ableism and classism. Our initiatives include an annual screening series, which we launched in New York in June 2014; a podcast about feminist film; a digital database and online discussion forum; and education/training workshops to be held at various locations.
